Staff, residents and family members at the Providence Manor long-term care home were joined by special guest MPP Kiwala April 27.MPP Sophie Kiwala visited the home to announce the funding of 64 additional beds as a part of the redevelopment of Providence Manor. “This investment is aimed at improving quality of life and quality of care for residents in Kingston and surrounding areas,” said Kiwala.
MPP Kiwala’s announcement is part of Ontario’s commitment to build 5,000 new long-term care beds by 2022 and more than 30,000 new beds over the next 10 years. “Our government is committed to supporting Ontario residents who rely on long-term care homes for their ongoing health and personal care needs. We have allocated 5,000 new long-term care beds, and are delivering on our commitment to increase long-term care capacity by 2022 as part of Aging with Confidence: Ontario’s Action Plan for Seniors,” said Dr. Helena Jackzek, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care in a release on April 27.
For more than 150 years Providence Manor has provided a home for seniors in our community. Today, Providence Care is planning for an exciting future for Providence Manor by relocating and redeveloping the long-term care home on the Heathfield property owned by the Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul in Central Kingston.
Providence Manor stands out as a model of “compassionate, respectful care for aging and frail individuals,” said Brian Devlin, Board Chair for Providence Care. “These 64 beds will add capacity for us to continue to care for the people in our region who need it most,” he added.
In the new home “we will continue to be guided by empathy, kindness, compassion and respect for the dignity of all,” said Cathy Szabo, President & CEO for Providence Care.
Funding additional beds means that pressure is alleviated from other areas of the health care system, “making care more accessible in our region,” Szabo added.
Providence Care has begun the design stage of this new project, and pending approval, details about the new long-term care facility will be released in the fall of 2018.
