On March 23 staff from Providence Care, Kingston Health Sciences Centre, and Brockville General Hospital were joined by MPP Sophie Kiwala for a special announcement. Gathered at Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kiwala announced that the Ontario government is investing an additional $11.6 million in hospitals across the South East LHIN. Kingston Health Sciences Centre will receive $8.2 million, Brockville General Hospital will receive $1.74 million and Providence Care Hospital will receive $1.04 million in additional funding in the 2018-2019 fiscal year.
MPP Kiwala stressed the importance of patients and families being able to “receive the care that they need when and where they need it”. “Last year Providence Care provided hospital care to over 1,200 inpatients and 25,000 outpatients. This funding will allow us to continue to provide high quality care to all of the patients and clients that access care and services in our hospital setting”, shared Krista Wells Pearce, Vice President Planning and Support Services at Providence Care.
Kiwala also announced that there is flexibility in how the money is used at each of the three hospital sites while stating that the funding will help to reduce wait times, address capacity issues and increase access to care. This announcement was made one day after the Ontario Government announced that they would invest an additional $822 million in Ontario hospitals in the 2018-2019 fiscal year for a 4.6 per cent additional increase in hospital funding.
