Two geriatric psychiatry units are located at Providence Care, Mental Health Services for older persons with severe mental illnesses, characterized by cognitive impairment, and behavioural problems. Younger persons with age-related cognitive impairment and behavioural disturbances may also be admitted.
Assessment and Stabilization Unit
This is the admissions unit for inpatient geriatric psychiatry. The 30-bed unit provides for the assessment, treatment and management of elderly persons suffering from dementia with behavioural disturbances. The goal is optimization/stabilization. Once stabilized, patients are transferred to the most appropriate setting, often a long-term care facility or the Geriatric Psychiatry Continuing Care Unit (GPCC).
Geriatric Psychiatry Continuing Care
This 30-bed unit cares for older patients with psychiatric disorders and/or cognitive impairment who are also experiencing behavioural disturbances and complex age-related physical changes. The goal is to successfully transition patients into a community setting when stabilization and optimization of function is achieved.
Referrals
